SUMMARY:Understanding Indigenous People Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Many people who are non-Indigenous don’t always feel they have a safe place to discuss the issues tied to understanding Indigenous peoples more\, spaces to ask honest questions. \nThis is why the Understanding Indigenous People Workshops are being held. In these online workshops\, we will discuss the last 500 years of North American history. We will see the impact of spending more time listening than talking as we engage with Indigenous peoples. We will learn the ways the academic community uses the terms colonialism and ethnocentrism when describing the last 500 years in North America. And we will learn the impact of colonialism and ethnocentrism on Native peoples\, people God has called the Church to reach with the Great Commission. \nAll these topics\, and more\, will be presented and discussed in a safe learning environment. Our goal is to grow in our understanding of our Indigenous neighbor\, that we might love them the way Christ has called us to in the Great Commandment. Your questions are not merely welcome\, they are coveted. \nThe workshops will take place on Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. Pacific / 8:00 p.m. Eastern every two weeks starting in October. They will be led by Parry Stelter\, a Bible teacher\, author\, speaker\, workshop facilitator\, chaplain\, and ambassador of Jesus Christ\, as well as ambassador of his fellow Indigenous people. He is originally from Alexander First Nation\, which is part of Treaty Six Territory in the province of Alberta\, Canada. \nWorkshop Days\n\nOctober 10\nOctober 24\nNovember 7\nNovember 21\n\n  \nRegister for the Workshops

SUMMARY:Retired Workers' Retreat & Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Register\nReunion – an instance of two or more people coming together again after a period of separation. “Reunion” is an appropriate title for the return of the Retired Workers’ Retreat. In 2020\, the annual retreat schedule was prematurely interrupted and abruptly cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus\, with no known return. After a long period of separation\, it is time to once again gather together for one last retreat and celebrate all the Lord has done. \nWe are excited to come together again at Cedar Springs Christian Camp\, May 15–17\, 2023\, and make way for some new retired workers events and traditions in 2024. Please join us for this final retreat\, reunite with old friends\, and meet some new ones. We will be joined by guests Kerry Bender\, Harry Kelm\, and Amber Pedroni\, along with a number of our retiring NAB missionaries. We look forward to seeing you there! \nPricing \nOptional early arrival on May 14 available for additional cost. \nSingle Occupancy Cost – $260/person \nDouble Occupancy Cost – $210/person \nEarly Arrival – additional $100/person \nRegister\nAdditional Details \nCheck-In \nRegular check-in begins Monday\, May 15\, at 3:00 p.m. Early arrival check-in begins Sunday\, May 14\, at 4:00 p.m. Sunday evening and Monday morning will include informal gathering and fellowship. \nMeals \nMeals are included in your retreat registration. Early arrival includes eight meals (Sunday dinner is not provided). SUMMARY:Bonfire
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is now closed for Bonfire. However\, we’d love for you to attend if possible! To check availability\, contact Carissa Steinhart. \n/// \nBonfire is a gathering of NAB leaders who have given themselves to joining God on mission in their various contexts. It is a time to build into deep community with one another\, receive inspiration and continue training together. \nWe are excited to share that David Fitch will be joining us for the main teaching at this year’s Bonfire. Fitch has been a long-time friend of the NAB; for a number of years he has been a crucial part of the third and final gathering of the Blue Ocean cohorts. His book Faithful Presence has had a shaping influence on a number of leaders across the NAB. Fitch has a unique voice that provokes in the best way while still remaining full of grace and truth. We are excited to be able to spend time learning from him. \nFitch’s soon-to-be-released book will form the basis of the sessions we have together; we will wrestle with issues of leadership in the church and how we may have given in to the wrong form of power. Sessions will include topics such as: \n\nThe Problem of Power and the American Church\nWorldly Power and God’s Power: They Are Not The Same\nThe Great Blurring: The Persistent Temptation to Blur the Powers\nThe Denial of God’s Power: The Lure of Christian Nationalism\nPlaying God With Worldly Power: The More Subtle Temptation\nLiving Under the Power of Christ: The Church in God’s Power\nWe Can Be Different: The Church on the Wrong Side of Power\n\nOn Thursday morning\, we will host a number of other key church leaders to wrestle together with what we discovered on Wednesday. \nAdditionally\, if you would like to come in a day early to attend Planter Summit taking place at the same location from April 24–26\, we cordially invite you to do so. \nHotel \nWe will once more be at the stunning Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook\, Illinois. The grounds are large and covered with serene walking paths and beautiful ponds. For those wanting to explore downtown Chicago on a free afternoon\, it’s just a 30-minute drive away. \nWhether you register for Bonfire alone or choose to come early to take part in Planter Summit\, hotel nights can be booked during your registration. If you want to stay additional nights at the hotel before or after the event(s) you register for\, you will need to contact the hotel to book those nights. You can call them at (630) 568-1234. \nIf you have any questions about your registration\, please reach out to Sara-May Cardy by calling (780) 435-1060\, ext. 30.

SUMMARY:Planter Summit
DESCRIPTION:Online registration is now closed for Planter Summit. However\, we’d love for you to attend if possible! To check availability\, contact Carissa Steinhart. \n/// \nThe challenges associated with the kingdom call of church multiplication are often a heavy burden for a lead couple to carry. Whether you’re planting a new church\, getting a microchurch off the ground\, or leading a movement of missional communities\, you know this is unique work. The sting of rejection\, the weariness of long ministry weeks\, and the joy of spiritual breakthroughs all weigh heavy on the souls of church multiplication leaders. As NAB leaders\, we are convinced the trajectory of any church multiplication effort begins with who we are becoming as leaders. \nWhether you’re a seasoned veteran in church planting with the NAB or just kicking tires on church multiplication\, this is a great few days of inspiration\, rest\, and renewal. \nTell Me More! \nPlanter Summit is not your average conference with a parade of speakers and highly programmed gatherings. For this experience\, we seek to gather about 50 people in a beautiful setting to hear from a seasoned church planting leader on the topic of soul care for the lead couple. We hope couples will attend together\, though there is no problem attending solo. Our times will be highly conversational and you will have several hours of non-programmed time to explore Chicago or just rest on the beautiful grounds of the Hyatt Lodge. \nWe are pleased to announce that Jeff Vanderstelt will be this year’s speaker. As the Executive Director of Saturate and visionary leader of the Soma Family of Churches\, Jeff gets to spend his days doing what he loves – mentoring leaders and equipping the Church in the gospel and missional living. Additionally\, Jeff is on the leadership team of Saturate the Sound\, a local church collective focused on gospel saturation in the Puget Sound. Jeff has authored Saturate\, Gospel Fluency\, and Making Space. He and Jayne\, his wife\, have three children; Haylee\, Caleb\, and Maggie. Connect with Jeff via his website or on Twitter @JeffVanderstelt. \nWhere? \nWe will be back at the stunning Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook\, Illinois. The grounds are very large and covered with serene walking paths and beautiful ponds. For those wanting to explore downtown Chicago on a free afternoon\, it’s just a 30-minute drive away. \nOther Notes \nAll signed NAB planters with up-to-date associational & MRF giving can attend Planter Summit for no cost. If you’re not sure about your status or don’t know if you’re on our email list\, contact Carissa Steinhart. \nConsider staying for Bonfire – which gathers on the same grounds as Planter Summit\, April 25–27 – joining many other men and women as we seek to create a movement within the NAB.  \nWhether you register for Planter Summit alone or choose to stay after to take part in Bonfire\, hotel nights can be booked during your registration. If you want to stay additional nights at the hotel before or after the event(s) you register for\, you will need to contact the hotel to book those nights. You can call them at (630) 568-1234.

SUMMARY:Impact of Culture on Biblical Interpretation and Spiritual Formation
DESCRIPTION:The cultural lens through which we read and engage with Scripture impacts more of our interactions with one another in the church than we probably realize. A diverse church must recognize that methods of biblical interpretation have cultural perspectives; different cultures can approach the same text from different perspectives yet remain faithful to Scripture. As we engage with people across culture lines\, we will be better able to reach them when we are aware of our own cultural biases in interpretation and of their cultural perspectives. Further\, as we grow in our cross-cultural competence within the church\, we can grow to love and respect those of different cultures who have different interpretations of the same biblical text. \nJoin Wayne Stapleton\, VP of Cross-Cultural Engagement\, and Bethany Kaposhi\, Cross-Cultural Engagement Leadership Team member\, on February 16\, 2023\, as they host a discussion with Larry Caldwell\, professor of Intercultural Studies and Bible Interpretation at Kairos University\, and Lyndell Campbell-Réquia\, NAB missionary and seminary professor in Brazil. This hour-long interview (10:00–11:00 am PST) will be followed by a half hour of questions and answers from those attending (11:00–11:30 PST). \nBeing on mission means joining God where he is moving\, and sometimes that means he calls us to engage across cultural lines. This requires us to be sensitive and aware of our own cultural biases. Join us for this webinar to talk about how each of us bring our own cultural context to how we understand and read Scripture and how that impacts the way we follow Jesus and interact with one another. \nSign Up For the Webinar

SUMMARY:Backyard Pilgrim Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The idea of pilgrimage has been part of many faith traditions through the years\, including Christianity. It is often an experience that comes with a deep sense of solemnity and purpose\, along with a desire for wonder and discovery. People spend great deals of money and time traveling to distant places in order to have these supernatural encounters. But\, what if a similar experience could be possible right where you live – right in your own backyard? \nMatt Canlis\, the author of Backyard Pilgrim\, and the inspiration for the Godspeed film says that\, “The film GODSPEED ends where I pray your local pilgrimage begins. It is a pilgrimage not only to recover where you live and discover what God is already doing in your neighborhood\, but also to learn to live there as God’s child.” \nWe invite you to join us in the journey of becoming Backyard Pilgrims this February as we enter into the Lenten season. Starting the week of February 19\, we will be running two book study groups that will be walking through the book\, Backyard Pilgrim\, by Matt Canlis. The groups will be led by Deb Judas and Bob Baumann\, who are both members of the Missional Initiatives team and local church pastors. Groups will meet once a week\, over the course of 6 weeks to discuss what they are learning and how they are seeing God at work in their lives and in their neighbourhood. \nBeing part of one of these groups will give you an opportunity to go on this pilgrimage for yourself\, while also seeing if this is something that you might want to take your church through at a later date. Each day there is a reflection (the Bible path) and a time to get out into your community (to walk the parish path). It will give you new lenses in which to see both the scripture passages as well as the people and places in your neighbourhood. \nIn preparation for the groups\, you’re invited to join us for a webinar with Matt Canlis\, January 23rd at 10:00am Pacific. During the webinar you’ll get the opportunity to hear a bit more about Matt’s journey and we’ll explain more about what the Backyard Pilgrim journey looks like. \nFor more info on the book or the Godspeed video\, visit their website\, or take a moment to watch our Year of Bonfire Gathering with Matt in 2021.  \nSign up for the webinar here.\nIf you already know that you want to join one of our Backyard Pilgrim groups\, please complete this form.

SUMMARY:Blue Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Blue Ocean is a one-year introduction to what it means to join God on mission\, to be formed into a follower with the character of Christ\, and to learn to reach friends and neighbors with a robust Gospel in our culture. \nWe meet three times a year in three different cities across the United States and Canada for multi-day retreats. Blue Ocean includes pastors\, leaders\, and regional ministers from across the NAB. Each cohort represents a cross-section of regions\, church sizes\, and ministry styles. The discussions are both encouraging and challenging. If you haven’t yet taken the plunge into Blue Ocean\, we want to invite you to join us for our three gatherings\, beginning in the fall. In case you’ve ever wondered\, each of the gatherings has a distinct focus: \n\nVancouver\, British Columbia – Theology (October 16–19\, 2022): Not only does this first set of meetings help foster a sense of community\, it also entails an exploration of the missio Dei and uses topics such as reading Scripture\, the Gospel\, and the Trinity to get at the missional nature of our God.\nSacramento\, California – Formation (February 5–8\, 2023): These few days focus being formed into the image of Christ\, especially as leaders and how the dark side of leadership can impact our ministries\, and even our very souls.\nChicago\, Illinois – Ecclesiology (April 24–26\, 2023): The final gathering is a movement toward missional ecclesiology: what it looks like for us to be a people in a place\, creating space and bearing witness to what God is doing there.\n\nOver the last number of years\, scores of NAB leaders have undertaken this journey together and by doing so have captured a vision for their church\, ministry\, and personal lives about what it means to be on mission with God in our communities. Consider taking the plunge into this next Blue Ocean cohort\, beginning October 16–19\, 2022. To find out more\, visit the NAB Blue Ocean webpage or reach out to Sara-May Cardy. \nEmail Sara-May

SUMMARY:Church Planter Summit
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce Dr. Tim Morey will be this year’s speaker. Morey is the founding and lead pastor of Life Covenant Church in Torrance\, California\, and he serves as an adjunct professor teaching church planting at Fuller Theological Seminary\, where he earned his DMin. He is also a church planting assessor\, trainer\, coach\, and author. His latest book is Planting a Church Without Losing Your Soul\, which\, in part\, explores how church planters can become people who invest in their own physical\, emotional\, relational\, and spiritual health. We are absolutely thrilled he will be joining us. \nWHY ATTEND PLANTER SUMMIT? \nThe challenges associated with the kingdom call of church multiplication are often a heavy burden for a lead couple to carry. Whether you’re planting a brand new church from scratch\, getting a micro-church off the ground\, or leading a movement of missional communities\, you know this is unique work. \nIf you’re a seasoned veteran in church planting with the NAB or just kicking tires on church multiplication\, this is a great few days of inspiration\, rest\, and renewal. \nWHERE? \nFor a second year\, we will be back at the stunning Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook\, Illinois. The grounds are very large and covered with serene walking paths and beautiful ponds. For those wanting to explore downtown Chicago on a free afternoon\, it’s just a 30-minute drive away. \n  \n2815 Jorie Boulevard\, \nOak Brook\, Illinois\, United States\, \n60523 \n  \nWHAT? \nIt’s not your average conference featuring a parade of speakers and highly programmed gatherings. For this experience\, we seek to gather about 50 people in a beautiful setting to hear from a seasoned church planting leader on the topic of soul care for the lead couple. We hope couples will attend together\, though there is no problem attending solo. Our times will be highly conversational and you will have several hours of non-programmed time to explore Chicago or just walk the beautiful grounds of the Hyatt Lodge. \n  \nWHEN? \nSeptember 26–28\, 2022 \nSCHEDULE \nMonday\, 9/26\n3:30 p.m.  – Welcome Reception outside the Q Room\n4:00 p.m.  – Session 1 – Tim Morey on Five Crucial Spiritual Disciplines\, Q Room\n6:30 p.m.  – Dinner\, Piazza Room downstairs\nLate Night – Casual reception in hotel lounge \nTuesday\, 9/27\n8:30 a.m.  – Coffee outside Q Room\n9:00 a.m.  – Session 2 – Planter Stories\, Q Room\n10:30 a.m. – Coffee Break\n11:00 a.m. – Session 3 – Tim Morey on Ministry Wounds\n12:00 p.m. – Lunch on your own\nAFTERNOON FREE\n2:00 p.m.  – Bonfire Community begins checking in\n6:00 p.m.  – Summit & Bonfire Dinner Banquet\, Grand Oaks Room\n7:00 p.m.  – Tim Morey on Present God’s People Mature \nWednesday\, 9/28\n8:30 a.m.  – Coffee outside Grand Oaks Room\n9:00 a.m.  – Combined Session Summit & Bonfire – Scot McKnight on The Jesus Creed\, Grand Oaks Room\n10:30 a.m. – Planter Summit concludes – Planter send off \nOf course\, all planters are encouraged to stay through Thursday morning for the rest of Bonfire\, you can register for Bonfire separately on the Bonfire Events page. \nFinal Note\nAll planters with a current signed Planter Agreement and up-to-date associational & MRF giving can use the discount code emailed to you from sstreeter@nabconf.org on May 12th. Additionally\, the NAB covers flight costs for all planters and spouses with a Planter Agreement in place. If you’re not sure about your status\, contact Amber (apedroni@nabconf.org). \nAlso consider staying for the Bonfire – which gathers on the same grounds as the Summit\, September 27–29 – joining many other men and women as we seek to create a movement within the NAB. This year’s speaker for Bonfire is Scot McKnight. \nRegistration includes accommodations (hotel) for September 26–27 (and 28 if you are staying for Bonfire)\, meals\, and all programming costs. \nRegister for Event (CA)\nRegister for Event (US)
