(Nearly) All about Missions

By Shan Reed
Director of Mobilization

The Hungarian Baptist Union holds a thanksgiving service every year at Camp Falcon Rock. It is a time of singing and sharing stories of God’s faithfulness, of being challenged by God’s Word, and of fellowship. This year, I had the privilege of joining the service on September 6. What an absolute joy to be in a room full of people praising and thanking God!

The NAB has been partnering with the Hungarian Baptists for over a decade. I have been praying with the missionaries and Hungarians as they have been building Camp Falcon Rock over the years. I was grateful for the opportunity to visit, to see the camp, and to hear stories of how God has been at work there through the years. The excitement and vision they have for the future ministry of Camp Falcon Rock is contagious.

Camp Falcon Rock serves not only the Hungarian Baptist Union but also groups in the region who want a safe place to gather. God is using the camp as a place for fellowship and growth for Christians and as an outreach to share the love of Jesus in the surrounding communities. . . .

The North American Baptist Conference values our missionaries, and the most important way we can support and care for them is through prayer.

There are two ways you can join us in praying for missionaries. First, we have developed a daily guide for praying for missionaries. (Download the PDF.)

The second way you can get involved is through taking part in an online prayer call every second Tuesday of each month. The next call is taking place Tuesday, November 10, 5:00–5:30 p.m. (PST), where we will pray for and with our NAB missionaries.

Save the link below to join us. No registration necessary.

More than a decade ago, former NAB missionaries Ron and Jean Seck founded a network known as Community Health Evangelism in the nation of Hungary, known as MEK Hungary. This ministry has partnered with the NAB for close to fifteen years, focusing on wholistic ministry to the Roma/Gypsy population located in most Hungarian villages throughout the country.

Over the past year, MEK went through a leadership change. The new director is Pastor Ferenc Olah, a Roma pastor who has served with MEK Hungary for over a decade. He and his wife, Judith, recently sent us this video thanking NAB churches for their ongoing support.

If you or your church are looking for opportunies to support, serve, and participate in MEK Hungary’s ministry through NAB Gateway by means of sister-church partnerships, short-term mission teams, or volunteers in mission, as well as financial and prayer support, you can reach out to Gateway Director and Central Europe Field Director Randy Schmor.

In addition to the pray call for missions, there are a number of other events coming up later this month, or in the near term. (All times listed are based on Pacific Standard Time.)

  • Riding the Waves of Grief (November 9, 3:30–4:30 p.m.) – Wayne Stapleton and Parry Stelter will explore the intersection of Indigenous experience, grief, Christian faith, and reconciliation, using Parry’s personal and family story as an Indigenous Christian and the story of Peter and Cornelius in Acts 10 to talk about grief as a shared human experience.
  • From Programs to Practices (November 19, 10:00–11:30 a.m.) – Deb Judas and Luke Miller from the Missional Initiatives Team will walk through what it looks like to reorient our focus from efficient, results-driven church models toward slower, relational, Spirit-led ways of being.
  • FUSE Trip Application Deadline (November 30) – This FUSE trip will take older high school students and young adults to the Philippines July 27–August 10, 2027, to get firsthand experience of international mission work; the application deadline is November 30.
  • Fit Assessment (February 9–11, 2027) – It’s not to early to consider taking part in the next Fit Assessment for potential church planters, church multipliers, or international missionaries, taking place for the first time in Southern California.
