Three Questions is a semi-regular series introducing individuals across the NAB by asking them about their story, their ministry, and what they are learning. These features on members of our NAB family also provide great opportunities to pray for them as we get to know more of their story. This week, we hear from C. J. Tubig, pastor of Children’s Ministry and Community Outreach at Grace Baptist Church in Calgary, Alberta.
What’s your story?
I was born in the Philippines and spent the first fourteen years of my life there before my family moved to Calgary, Alberta. Looking back, I can see how deeply my upbringing influenced my identity, values, and faith. Growing up in the Philippines taught me the importance of family, culture, and community. It also gave me a greater appreciation for the sacrifices my parents made to provide opportunities and a better future for our family.
Faith was always present in my life. I was raised in the church and from a young age I understood the importance of knowing Jesus. However, it was not until I was thirteen that my faith became personal. I realized that following Jesus was not simply about being part of a Christian family or attending church; it was about having a relationship with him for myself. This realization marked the beginning of a deeper desire to seek God and become more like Christ.
At sixteen, I first sensed God calling me into ministry. While I had a desire to serve him, I also wrestled with fear, uncertainty, and doubt. For several years, I tried to avoid or negotiate my way out of that calling, but God remained faithful and persistent. Looking back, I am grateful he never stopped pursuing me. Eventually, I said yes and began my theology degree at Ambrose University. From the moment I started, I knew I was exactly where God wanted me to be. It became clear he had not only prepared the path ahead of me but had also prepared my heart to walk it.
What’s ministry like for you?
I began working at Grace Baptist Church in March 2023 as the director of Children’s Ministry in a part-time role. . . .
With this year’s Advent, we are trying something new. For the first time ever, we will be printing the Advent devotionals in a booklet, making it easier for you to take part in the devotionals together as a congregation, Bible study, or small group.
For those who have signed up to receive the devotional emails, we will still be sending them as usual, as well as posting them on the NAB website, but the physical booklet will allow you to go to that special place of connection with the Lord with no screens to distract you.

The 2026/2027 cohort of Blue Ocean is now accepting applications.
Blue Ocean is a transformative one-year learning experience. You’ll be part of a cohort that journeys together throughout the year, exploring what it means to join God on mission, be formed into the character of Christ, and dwell in your neighborhood – sharing and living out the Gospel. This program includes three in-person learning modules, each held in a different location across the US and Canada.
Participants come from across North America, each of whom serve in leadership roles at NAB churches of varying sizes and ministry styles. Our modules are thoughtfully designed to integrate teaching, conversation, hands-on activities, shared experiences, and meals, creating a holistic and immersive experience.
The first module meets in Vancouver, British Columbia, October 20–23, 2026.

NAB churches in Southeastern South Dakota and Northwest Iowa are cordially invited to an International Mission Pop-Up. This event is for all ages!
Experience an evening of engaging conversation and connections around international missions. Hear from NAB missionaries Brandon and Marci Jones from Brazil and Shan Reed, NAB mobilization director and former NAB missionary to Japan.
It can be easy for our churches to feel isolated or as if what we do doesn’t seem to make any kind of global impact, particularly when it comes to the Kingdom efforts regarding international missions. This Pop-Up will help your church grasp the larger picture of NAB International Missions, help connect you with other local NAB churches who share a similar interest in missions, and hopefully promote awareness of and engagement with NAB International Missions and missionaries.
This pop-event will take place 6:30–8:00 p.m. on September 30, 2026, at 18th Street Church (formerly Trinity Baptist Church) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Refreshments will be served.
