LEADERSHIP NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015

Generational Inventory

I am an aging baby boomer. With graying hair and a slowing body—and some might nod to a slackening mind as well—I am in solidarity with that large bubble of North Americans who were born between 1946 and 1964 and are now approaching that time commonly known as the retirement years. Now, because I was born at the very tail end of the baby boom era (1964, which makes me fifty for those needing help with their math), I still view myself as being in the bull’s-eye of my productive years, having fifteen to twenty years of prime leadership remaining. And being a strong believer in the wisdom of experience, I think I will have years of influence even after those years.

NAB Executive Director Search Update
The Executive Director Search Committee has been meeting weekly since the beginning of November. To date, almost a dozen nominations have been submitted. Reference checks, leadership diagnostic tools, and face-to-face interviews are all part of the process for those moving beyond the initial recommendation. Please continue to pray for God’s direction in identifying a candidate for consideration.

LEADERSHIP NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2014

Warning Lights

My university-aged son called home a few days ago to inform me that the check engine light had flashed on while driving home from work that day. He wondered what he should do. Having driven any number of older model cars over the years, I walked him through my experiences with bad sensors, faulty plugs and wires, and poor hoses, and encouraged him to get it to a repair shop that could run the diagnostics and look up the codes for the problem.

I wish that leaders in positions of spiritual authority had a form of the check engine light that would flash when inner misfires occurred. Wouldn’t it be helpful if a light would warn the leader to pull over, pull up the hood of his or her life, and examine the deeper issues long before irreparable damage happened?
